SARAH LOVES CAMBODIA

Although its been over a week since leaving Cambodia, I feel as if part of me is still there, symbolically of course.

Serve Cambodia has indeed been a wonderful and unforgettable experience! Over a span of two weeks, not only did I rediscover love and friendship, I also learnt to treasure the simple pleasures in life. I'm sure that this trip has definitely left a deep impression on the entire team.

Seeing how easily contented the kids in Cambodia are makes me feel a little guilty. Most local students here dread going to school every week, and find it a chore to have to wake up early and sqeeze into the extremely packed bus or train. On the other hand, the Cambodian kids are so eager to learn! The fact is that their school starts earlier than us, and their long-sleeved uniforms are definitely less comfortable than our home-clothes. Yet, they all still diligently cycle to school each day. Not to mention, the facilities that they have in their schools can't be compared to the overwhelming facilities that we enjoy. It's a shame how we don't treasure the wonderful education system that is given to us.

Another thing that really moved me was watching the kids at praise and worship. They all literally sing their hearts out. The simple faith that they have in God is just so heart-warming. For them, they read the bible, and they believe it, whereas we challenge God every now and then, and wonder if he really exists.

Also, the kids are just so eager to share this love that they have found in God. They will just go up to you and ask if you believe in Christ! Think: evangelism. I just love the way the kids have such simple faith, a kind of faith that we all should learn from.

Over the two weeks that I've spent in Cambodia, I learnt that there's more to life than computers and electronic gadgets. Instead, we can always go back-to-basics. Playing ball games doesn't always have to involve winning, it's about having fun with friends.

I just love playing and interacting with the kids. Seeing the smiles on their faces is just so heart warming, an indescribable feeling of happiness just engulfed me.

In conclusion, although the work that had to be done to paint the walls and build the basketball court was extremely tough, the fun and laughter that i experienced definitely made all that work worth it. It was through the work that I got to interact more with the kids, and with my fellow teammates.

Hi to all! I know it's a little late posting this up.. But better be late than never right? :)

I'm really happy to be seeing Serve Cam people in school almost everyday in school! Especially Julianna, Sarah, Diana, Gary, BX, Fiona, Yvonne( Acc oei~) and somewhat.... Heng hao ( he seems to be everywhere! ) Seeing all of you make me reminisce about the times we spent in Cambodia. Scrubbing walls, painting, mixing cement, transferring rocks, singing, cheering, aiding the injured, playing with the kids...all these activities seem so recent..

Firstly, I must say that I'm really more appreciative of the little things I have in Singapore now. The kids in the FGA and solid rock are soooo friendlyyy and niceeeee! I had a good time talking and playing with them! They showed me a different side of life, that happiness can be achieved from simple pleasures. They all seemed so sincere in everything they do. I feel really loved and comfortable with the kids there.. it’s like the feeling of a family. Very very heart warming. :)

I enjoyed the most when I see them having fun! Especially during games day at FGA! They innocence reminds me of the days when I was younger. Looking at the smiles on their faces made the trip more worthwhile. I hope that the kids in Cambodia enjoyed themselves and that we have created a positive impact, no matter big or small, in their lives.

I'm really fortunate to be given the opportunity to be part of the Serve Cambodia Team. The experience that I got during the 14 days in Cambodia was priceless. It's an experience I'll never forget...and I’ll carry the values I had learnt with me.

I would like to thank the Serve Cambodia team for all your efforts and work. It would be no fun without you guys! I love you all! Hope that we can continue to keep in contact and do our best to help the community in every ways!

The two weeks that i had spent in Cambodia is one of the most memorable moments in my life. I felt very fortunate to be in Singapore after what i had experience the life of the people over there. In Singapore, almost every children would have the opportunity to go to school. However, in Cambodia, a lot of the children did not have the chance to go to school because of poverty. Many children had lost their parents during the civil war.

In the first week where we are in the orphanage, the children there were all very hardworking and wish to further their studies in the university after they graduate from the high school. I am very happy to know them and worked together with them.

In the second week, the team worked very hard on the building of the basketball court. However, we still could not complete it when we left. This makes me feel that, there is a lot of things that we want to do but could not do.

In conclusion, the whole trip had left a very deep memory inside me which i would carry it for the rest of my life.

Serve Cambodia was truly a great experinence for me and I am very thankful for all the luxury items I have in life and the love and warmth I receive from my family.

Since primary school I was taught the song "Give Thanks" but I have never really comprehend the true meaning of that song until we went to Mdm Cheah's place. As I sing the verse and now let the weak say, "I am strong" Let the poor say, "I am rich" I truly grasp the meaning and the emotion for that song and it has become the most meaningful song in my life. Everyday this song will inadvertently replay in my head and made me feel that I am very blessed to have a roof over my head,three sumptuous meal a day and all the love I have got from my family everyday for twenty-one years.

At FGA I learn something new in life, that is we tend to think that people from the economically disadvantaged are leading a sad life because they cannot buy and have the things they want. Yet the people living in poorer countries can be happy too. On the contrary, people who are living in a country which is economically stable are never satisfied with what they have because they can never have enough money to satisfy their unlimited wants.

Serve Cambodia made me reflect on all the things that I have in life and be thankful of every single little thing that I owned. I have made many new friends in Cambodia and I hope my friendship with them will go a long way because it is them who taught me how to appreciate the love I have got from my family.

Reflection

It was a memorable experience as all the people involved in this trip really put all their effort into completing the various tasks and objectives. It was not easy for us to work in a team of people that we initially do not know well.
However, it was really enjoyable and i felt thankful having to work with them.

Sometime, we may have some unhappiness toward one another, but we manage to understand one another and try to give and take. I personally felt that it was a very good opportunity for us to train our interpersonal skills.

Apart from that, workng with the kids over there was fulfilling, it was the best time for us to communicate with them. Through communication and every little actions, the Cambodia kids revealed their sincere self. Some of them shared their background story with me and I realized that I’m very lucky to be born in Singapore. I've learnt how to appreciate what I have now.

I said that because some families had difficulties sending their kids to school for education. Therefore, once the center is willing to support them for their education, some of them worked extra hard to make sure they won’t disappoint the center's effort.

However, i was really sad when I learnt that their education system was not as strict as ours. Rich families there can just give some money to the teacher to cheat in the exam. As most of the children in the centre felt it was unfair for them as they work so hard but their result was not as good as others who acted dishonest during exam.

Despite all these, some of them still continue to work hard without giving up as they wish to attend university. One of the main reasons why they never give up education was because of hope & their love for their family. Their hope and desire to clinch a better job. A better job which creates a better future for themselves and their love ones. Even though I am older than most of them, the burden they have are much more than me.

Throughout my two weeks over there, I really had a lot of fun with them. I felt deeply touched by their sincerity. Furthermore, they showered me with genuine care and concern, it warms my heart.

Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who were involved in this serve trip which includes sponsors, the hosts who took care of us in Cambodia, two lecturers who puts in a lot of effort in preparing the work and those "heros" which we worked with, the whole of serve Cambodia 2009 TEAM! This trip had been wonderful and of valuable experience.

Lastly, I want to apologize to those people whom I may have unintentional hate you all, Sorry!

It has been great experience spending 2 weeks in Ccambodia. Through this community service project, i have learnt a couple of things. First and foremost, i learnt to appreciate things which could be just as simple as food and accommodation. During our stay at the orphanage, our meals would consist of mainly just one dish and lots of rice. Another example which i could learn from the Cambodians would be they seem to appreciate what they have and not expecting much. The next thing i have learnt would be perseverance, even though there were couple of days where we had to do hard labour, the team hardly complained at all. Another example could be communicating with most of the local kids there as it often took some time to put the message across.
One of the best rewards from this trip would be having to know a few Cambodian friends. Even though it has almost a month since we left the orphanage at Phnom Penh, we would continue to keep in contact through emails and the Internet. The last thing that i have enjoyed from this trip would be having a great team, where we could complete all the tasks together no matter how tough they were.

Serve Cambodia has definitely made an impact in my life. Cambodia opened my eyes to a whole new culture and lifestyle which conflicts ours. The people there were really simple minded and the little things like playing with them, showering them with care and concern made them really happy and that made them really happy. I suppose through our complicated lifestyles where everyone is busy trying to attain perfection made us neglect all the simple things in life. We are never contented with what we have, like having a basketball court and we are still complaining like how it is not well maintained but for them, such simple facilities really made them happy. Having spent 2 weeks in a foreign land made me realized how fortunate I am to be living in Singapore. Many a times we take the things and people around us for granted, and after this trip, I learnt how to appreciate them more.

Though with the advance technology that we have in Singapore, we never get to experience how to mix the cement and scrubbing of the wall as all these are done by others. But within the 2 weeks that we’ve spent there, we experienced the “stone age” of mixing the cement and painting of the wall, which was pure manual labour.

The most difficult thing that we have experienced was the language barrier. We were not able to express freely or communicate with the people there as much as we wanted to. However the children there were very keen on learning our language and I had an enjoyable time teaching them some basic Chinese. The barrier has to be broken down somehow and for us, it was through playing with the people there. Playing is an universal language like playing basketball, soccer and hopscotch. We do not need to speak their language nor do they need to speak ours in order to play with us, because playing is the one thing that everyone has in common.

Human always learn to appreciate things after they lost it.

Spent 2 weeks in Cambodia, made me realise that our pace are moving too fast. Maybe is due to environment factor that we could not slow down to appreciate things around us. Have you ever tried lying down on the grass patch looking at the sky? I would say I never did.

But I had found some other factors to appreciate people around me. Cambodia is a place that makes me re-learn a lot of things. Things like human relationship.

The first week in Cambodia, we walked them to school. The walk is about 10 minutes. Although I ever walked to school before which the journey took me 20 minutes. But I still will have alternative of taking bus to school on rainy days. But they do not have this privilege. It does not matter it is a rainy day or sunny day. Their transport is either by foot or by bicycle (for the higher grade). I love the times spent while painting the walls with them. And the times spent teaching them Chinese. They are so happy to be able to learn Chinese as a language and they attempted to communicate with us in Chinese too. That is something that touches my heart. Meals provided by the centre makes you feel at home. The local delight and drinks that we made for them, they love it and they asked for more.

Things might be changing after coming back from Cambodia. It might not be something that we know. But I believe, our attitude towards life would somehow change. Because I know, there is something always missing ever since I am back here. That will be the love that we received and given during the trip.

Thank you to the whole team including Miss Jamie & Mr Robert. Thank you for the 2 hosts and the kids back in Cambodia. Not forgetting all the organisations and people who had been doing the background work.

Without all of you, this trip will never be possible.

Well, Serve Cambodia 2009 not only left me with experience and whole lots of fun but a definite change in attitude and perspective towards many things. One thing after this trip, I am certain of is that we are sufficient in all things, as long as you are contented. Contentment is one of the valuable virtues which the Cambodian kids and people taught me. Even though, we, foreigners, see and feel that there is so much poverty, so much pain, so much suffering and so much we can do to make it a better place for them, yet these Cambodians willingly accept their plight and are satisfied and contented with what they have. All the more, I should too be contented and happy with what I have. As what the world says, “People are never satisfied with what they have”. I think these kids that I lived, talked, laughed and interacted with, proved this wrong. One thing, I ask myself when I came back, if the kids were placed in this society that we live in, would they behave differently? I’m just wondering.

This trip was one that was of real hands-on community service work, all our effort and sweat. I recalled someone asked me, must we sacrifice in exchange for someone’s blessings? I guess, we didn’t really sacrifice much or at all. When it is our desire to help people, there would not be any sacrifice because it is out of a willing heart.

The Serve team was truly one that was FAMILY. Even though, there were conflicts, disagreements and stuff, we were all there for the same purpose and reason, serve Cambodia.

I really miss the times we had in Cambodia as a team and also the kids there. Whenever, I look at the time, I will always remember about the kids there, like at this time what are they doing? Is it meal time?

“Touching Hearts, Building Lives” – not only was this achieved for the Cambodian people, we too also achieved this. This trip touched our hearts and built our lives through the valuable experience.

SERVE CAMBODIA 2009, more than just an OCIP.

Away from home and into a foreign land, friendships were forged and memories knitted.

There are just so many things I have learned during the trip.

I have learned to be more detailed and thoughtful when it comes to planning of the itinerary for the trip. It was difficult to strike a balance to ensure that the schedule is not too packed but at the same time, we are able to maximise the time we have at the orphanage. This trip had taught me to be sensitive to others needs and ensure that everyone safety are looked after.

The hospitality of the locals and the young children have deeply warmed my heart. Their friendliness and sincerity is the bridge to the differences between our communication barriers. Even though we might not be able to converse in common language but between the Cambodians and us we share the language of love and care for each other.

After this trip, I realised that I am so blessed to live in Singapore. There are just so many things that I had taken advantage of, such as the clean tap water we can consume! Not forgetting the road system we have! I still remember the flooded area that we have to walk across to get to and out of the feeding center. There are just so many things to be thankful for just because I am living in Singapore!

Even though its only 14 days of community service, but the impact of being able to be a blessing to others have encouraged me a long way down. I believe the rest of the team members had felt the same way too.

I am really thankful for God’s providence in my entire trip. Indeed, the Lord had never put me in a situation where his grace isn’t sufficient.

For the fun we had shared,

and for the friendship we have made,
we will keep the spark to care for others burning...

The trip this round really gave me a deeper insight and understanding of the society in Cambodia.
Comparing the experiences that I have gained in this trip far supercedes that when I first stepped into Cambodia back in 2005. Because of the fact that we were still young in 2005, (only 14 years of age!) there are hardly any "tough" jobs that suit us. However this time, we actually stepped out of our comfort zone to paint walls and to built a basketball court. Personally, I have never expected that painting walls would require so many procedures and mixing cement can be such a tedious job. In Singapore, we tend to take things for granted because of the advance technology that is "bestowed" to us. Thus, going for this trip has definitely enlightened many of us, such as the education system back home in Singapore, the food that we eat, the houses that we live in etc.
Friendships have been forged within the team, as well as amongst the students back in Cambodia and our team members. Although we were only able to spend one week with them in FGA, the experiences and memories that have been created will go a long way. Being able to see the students gain from our teachings is extremely satisfying and rewarding because we know we have cause an impact in their lives.
I am thankful for being able to get this opportunity to go for this Serve trip. Once again, I have learnt to be appreciative of what I have and grown in many aspects. We have indeed fulfilled our motto of "Touching Hearts and Building Lives!" Thank you everyone who made this trip possible.

When i first got under Cambodia's sky, i bluntly went, "How could any sky look as beautiful as this?!"
It was definitely a twitter-perfect moment, at any time of the day actually.

Throughout those 2 whole weeks, it was an emotinal rush.

I could feel that they were really expecting something from us, and i really wanted to meet that expection.
I was never really a people-person, so it took me so much longer before i started opening up to them.
And slowly as the dim lights gathered themselves and the last dawn broke, i started to wonder why i didn't open up to them earlier.

Don't mind me putting it so awfully bluntly but initially, it felt like we were simply thrown into the same house with the children and made to just work on those walls day in and out.

But somehow, that changed, entirely.

It not longer was a "we got to scrub, againnnnnnn" nor whispering suspiciously amongst ourselves a "should we talk to them?" but rather a - "leave it to me!" or a spontany "let's go do some basketball!".

I was in love with that place and the people in it. I've gotten so intergrated with their lifestyle that it really felt like it was my own.

But then as we grew closer to the children, i started wondering that on the last day of this expedition, who would be the one to hold my hands and weep with me, and to actually miss me.

It's odd when you're here to bless others but end up being insecure on whether they would even remember you at all.

Everything that i was thinking so much about, making my heart heavy and weary were all just pure foolishness.

There was a day of affirmation. I really had no idea we could be that significant to them. I always thought that we were annual and temporary, but somehow to us, they are permanent.

Thank you all so much -
for bringing me to the morning glories;
for that one basketball court that made me like a professinal basketballer-in-the-making;
for those meals i had in the same bench as them;
for the night they held my hands and prayed deeply;
for that one song i learnt in khmer;
for all those simple but heartfelt letters they gave;
for the last night when someone held my hands and soothed my weeping heart;

and to our team that i felt like family.

That was why i never really did miss home, because it already felt like i was.

I hope that this has one way or another, somehow, little by little - inspired someone, somewhere on this huge Earth.

Cambodia is mostly known for its dark past ;
the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge, and perhaps also for the Angkor Wat,
one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Yet the Cambodia that I have come to know, is way more than just that.
The genuine love and care that the Cambodian people have shown to me,
the kindness and sincerity,
and most of all,
the childlike innocence and faith that they had in God,
in what they believed for made me realize how privileged and blessed I am.

Simple things that we have in Singapore,
like going to school, having sweets to eat, handphones and computers to use,
internet connection readily available, electricity....The list is endless!
We have taken all these little things in life for granted, and overlooked what we have been blessed with. We always want more of this, more of that, yet have we ever taken a step back to count our blessings, one by one?

These 15 days have taught me many precious valuable lessons,
and I'd never exchange these 15 days for anything else in the world.

Thank you Ms Jamie Teo for being the "doremon" of the group and Mr Robert Yow for stepping in whenever there was help needed.

Appreciation.

Ive learnt how to appreciate things better in Phnom Penh.Studying is like a 'luxury' for the kids in Cambodia,instead of being a 'necessity' like what is happening in Singapore.Having that priviledge ,yet we did not make full good use of what is provided for us.Unlike the kids,their enthusiasm for studies that ive seen while teaching them in the Chinese enrichment class,'woke 'me up.
Simple meals that we ate over there also reminds me about the importance of food wastage which is quite common among youths in Singapore & also the availability of large variety of good food we have in Singapore ,.I must now learn how to better appreciate & be thankful of what we have over here in Singapore.

Throughout the working & planning process,more or less there are bound to be difficulties and problems that start surfacing,but no matter what,the kids will still have a solution to it to help me after i let them know of the various problems.Its never easy being a leader,whats more its my first time.But lucky for me,theres Jul to guide me as days past & honestly ive learned alot from her.Thankyou jul!

Therefore i say,Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest... It's about

who came, and never left your side.The cambodian kids are just like the stars in the sky,they are always there no matter what.in the night or my darkest time,they shine brightly for me.While in the day,I cant see the stars,but I know that they are somewhere up there looking after me.

Regarding my experience at Siem Reap building the basketball,I have a short story to share whereby i bet most of us might have heard of this before when we are young,but im one of the lucky few ones that have the chance of experiencing it.

"It takes one not much effort to break just one chopstick into half,but when you have 1 big bundle of them together.Not only you are unable to break them up,instead you can make good use of them to improve & do something beneficial like how we serve Cambodia.

"One for all & all for one,Unity and thats the word."

We all came as individuals,we are strangers to one another,but through bonding and the trip,we stick together like the bundle of chopsticks ,like a team, achieve goals & targets together like how we scrub our lifes off the wall,lacquer and then paint them,how we mix the cement before we pass it around to build the basketball court.All these couldnt be achieve if we dont see everybody as ONE big serve team."human chain,human chain ,lai lai lai"

Through this trip,not only ive found new friends both in the team and in cambodia but most importantly,ive found myself.Trust me,if you have know me long enough before the trip, im a pure slacker that laze around all day,i must admit that,but i was so motivated to reach the target set for building the basketball court,that i unknowingly changed.

Whenever I feel like giving up,I will remember why I held on for so long in the first place.For the kids in cambodia.I tell myself,since ive come all the way here,lucky to be the chosen few ,been through the interviews and camp,why give up?My mind just wouldnt allow myself to rest ,knowing the fact that we almost couldnt finish building the basketball court in time,but my body soon gave way a little.

What we could do to help cambodia as an individual is already so limited ,whats more we have to race against time,all these gave me the sudden energy boost to persevere on til the end of the project & never give up.Like the cambodia kids,despite their country having such a history,they still stand strong and carry on with life,so why should i give up when i only had some minor physical challenge compared to the difficulties they faced & the psychological barriers they have to overcome.

I also learnt to be more thankful especially to the people who care for me throughout the trip,with our medic,Isabel,helping me out with the plasters and all with the many little blisters that ive got throughout my feet and hands.& also to ms teo ,who kept feeding us with water to keep us hydrated while working under the hot sun.

I rmb theres this distinct incident whereby i wanted to carry on helping out with the scooping of cement after i put the plasters and all,but ms teo stopped me & took over me.I felt so useless at that point but at the same time i felt so touched by her words.She said that she will stop working,only after i do.

I bet this is actually what the kids in Cambodia want from us,not big expensive bungalows,million dollar cash nor a Ferrari car,but actually our love & care because it feels great knowing someone that you may not be so closed with at first,to care for you.Like what ive experienced,I felt like im at the top of the world.

Flashback alittle,i still remember Mr ben tan's advice to us before the trip,is to bring our cupful of water over there,pour it all out,before we can pour in more water.I did it,ive pour all that ive got in the cup,and now im flooded with unconditional love,concern & care from the cambodia kids & my amazing serve team.

I had my Human Resource Management tutorial this Wednesday. The first thing my tutor asked the class was how we spent our holiday. As my peers shared their internship experiences as well as overseas trip for leisure, I felt that I had the most interesting and fruitful holiday among all my classmates. My tutor asked,” You must be feeling fortunate to be in Singapore right?” I hesitated, whether to say yes or no. Yes because Singapore is a safe place with good governments, facilities and environment. No because I hardly experience warmth, sincerity and simplicity in Singapore. Instead, I was blessed with all these over at Cambodia. Having stayed at Cambodia for two weeks, it was hard for me not to make comparisons.

Through this trip, I got to know many friends (both the team and the people from Cambodia). I can still remember vividly how worried I was before we headed to Cambodia. I knew that I would miss home. Also, I was worried about having communication problems with anyone, regardless of the people from our team or the people at Cambodia. It would be disastrous if problems crop up because we have to spend two weeks together. Thankfully, none of my worries came true.

When I was at Cambodia, I felt as if I was sitting on a roller coaster. I went through a list of fifty-six positive human emotions few days back. I checked and I realised I had experienced all the emotions during that two weeks. A life rich with emotions is a rich life. I brought back two important things from Cambodia. They are the beautiful memories and true friendships. I thank God for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

Before going for the trip, I have a low expectation of the place like power failure. The place is better than what I expected. I didn't even use 1 of my battery for my torch light.

I realised how fortunate I am in Singapore because I dont need to walk such a long distance to school every day. The children in Cambodia have to walk such a long distance every day. i think they really have strong determination and perseverance to study or else they will not walk such a long distance to school.And made me want continue to do something for them. And made me want to study harder, work harder, so that I could continue to bring happiness to more people in the world as there are still alot of people who need our help.

And thanks to this serve trip, i'm able to attend the videography lesson to learn about videography. And I realised it is really very tough capturing the right angle and adjusting the DVC so that the image will not be so dark and many many.. And when i review those videos, I felt disappointed with some parts as the video is too shaky or blurish, but at least I could re-flash back some of these precious memories and moments.

I would like to thank everyone for making this Serve Trip possible and enjoyable.

I realised that although most of us talk different languages be it Chinese, English or Khmer, they are all linked by one universal language. That language is of kindness and sincerity. This is a language that is difficult to learn but once you learn it, it is a very useful asset to your character building.
Looking at a scenario, imagine two people speaking different languages and can speak very little of each other's first language. Most of what is said is heard by the other as gibberish; hence to understand each other, most of the conversation is through body language. Should the body language be insincere, one is able to see through the character of the other.
It seems that in their less materialistic world of theirs, character of a person seems to matter much more than how much a person is worth in assets.
There could be a possible reason behind this and it very likely is because they tend to have more interaction with friends and family even more than we do with ours. As for us in a more materialistic world, most of what we see us is the potential of someone who has the ability to earn money, Character generally is second to monetary power. Most of this paragraph is a generalisation, but without generalisations, we would be unable to see the contrast of both cultures.
I feel extremely fortunate to be on this serve trip and even more honoured to have made all the friends that I have made both in the Serve Cambodia team and those in Cambodia. I have grown both in spirit and in knowledge in life. Thanks you everyone... from the bottom of my heart :)

It’s great to be part of the team. Thank you for giving me this chance to serve, a chance to know myself better.
Being the youngest among all, I felt awkward at first, and knowing everyone do know someone else in the team made it worst.
But as time goes by, I got to know more about the team.
And yes, I would say it’s real lucky to be the youngest.
Many took care and concern of me. For that, I'm very thankful.
I believe everyone who went for the trip had learnt many.
For myself, I personally think that it’s an eye-opening experience, getting to see/know the other side of the world.
Yes, it’s true that they're the poorer country, but from what I'd seen and experienced, they're way much richer than any wealthy countries.

Initially, I thought I'm the one who's fortunate, and was supposed to bring happiness and motivate them. But what I didn't expect was I realized they're the real fortunate ones.
They truly understand what's life really is and cherish everything they have.
During the enrichment class that we gave, some of them really shown me what's passion and willingness in learning truly is. There's just so much they want to learn/know and so little we can teach. And that spirit strongly motivated me to work harder.

I regret to completely miss your Serve Cambodia Mission 2009 in Siem Reap. But I wish to thank you and Sir Robert, your Team of Students, and the Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Administration for your wonderful way of teaching global social awareness and international cooperation to your students, in the process extending a strong helping hand to the needy people in developing countries like Cambodia. And thank you so much for allowing us to be one of your partners in this valuable humanitarian endeavor.

The many young lives you have touched and helped will become better persons because they will never forget meeting you and the kindness you have shown them. Many young people from Kampong Speu, Kampong Thom and Siem Reap will remember you as they enjoy the buildings you helped make for them, or the play ground you gave them, and the happiness they felt as you gave them gifts, spent time talking and playing with them and treating them with dignity. Many of them we hope will help other people in the future also as you have helped them. For sure you made a difference in their lives.

I learnt to give ceaselessly,
Love tirelessly,
and to find the joy in the simple things.

The pains I face in the city and school pale in comparison to what the children have to handle. The children have taught me that humans are really more capable and strong than they seem or perceive. They have been through the growing pains of poverty and some abuse, yet they can speak about it casually with a forthright and optimistic attitude, not seeking or wallowing in self pity.

Farming and poverty is part of their livelihood, yet they hardly grumble. On the contrary they are grateful and contented.

I have a lot to learn from these children, and ironically, even though we went to Cambodia to help these children, sometimes it seems that we are the ones requiring help, a vivid reminder of the immense potential yet delicate vulnerability of the human mind and spirit, how to count our blessings, and that what we have been given is sometimes enough, if not more than what we require, yet we do not seem to know the ends of our wants.

How is it that kids younger than ourselves can learn what we supposedly do not seem to know, seek joy in the the tiny things, beyond the aspects of materiality.
To laugh unpretentiously.

They may have little in terms of material things,
but wealth in things unseen.

What is it that matters in the end?

Pre trip activity: Breaking the Singapore recoerd YOG 2009

After several weeks of intensive preparation and planning, our team managed to hold a small scale, yet significant event in Singapore's history.

It was something related to the world, something that transcends international boundaries, many people holding up flags at once!! We were going to set the Singapore record for the most number of people holding up the most number of flags at a location at one time.
Yes! All of us who were going to the attend the event had the goal fresh in our minds.

Soooo.... The big event started off with a briefing, and we gathered in the serene sports hall, 20 of us, with some gregarious volunteers from the Student care service. We were briefed on our tasks and thus got started on our various duties. A few moments later, the New Town Secondary school students joined in. We cooperated well together, thus with our synergy, we managed to finish setting up the area for the flags to be held up at promptly and efficiently.

There were the lovely boys and girls at the packing booth,

Some at the Orange Ribbon booth, initiated by the New Town Students themselves,

our very own pride and joy, the Serve Cambodia 2009/2010 booth!

Not forgetting the diligent people setting up the floor area for the flag bearers,

and finally some representives from Ngee Ann Polytechnic Leo Club, coming down with some interesting facts to show about the the cultures of various countries.

So, after all the preparations were in place, busses of energetic students came streaming in, grabbed their goodie bags, made pledges at the orange ribbon booth and contributed their heartfelt messages and handiwork the chilldren at our section.

The hall lost its serenity at once and was trasformed into a vibrant community of youths.

Following that, something else was happening. The MCs announced the start of the event with their well rehearsed speeches. Then, there was a talk and a mini quiz about which countries the flags belonged to that the audience participated in with mild enthusiasm.

And lo and behold, a complication arose!
We did not have sufficient participants for holding up the flags. Thankfully, there were some people at the sports complex and the running track which we managed to rope into our midst.

Thus after all the commotion was over, all the participants gathered in the allocated spaces for the various flags and together, we held them up at the count of 3, and maintained the pose for 10 seconds. The judge was a stringent lady which allowed for no compromise for the record that was to be set.

And...

What we were eagerly anticipating was announced!

The record is set!

Everyone exploded in joy!

The event was a booming success, thanks to all our combined effort.

Day 2-Bonding Camp

We started off with a gathering at “HQ” where we had our briefing and was allocated to different groups. I was assigned to the “Bookmarks and Booth” group and soon after, we were all getting ready to start on our duties. My group and I headed to Block 72, Level 7, where we started brainstorming on different ideas as to what would be practical and creative for the kids in Cambodia. Many suggestions were generated and it was great to see everyone participating and contributing. Although there were some disagreements, I was glad that we accepted each other’s feedback and continued to improve on the idea to make it a better one.
Soon after, we had to move on to Canteen 2 to prepare for the next activity, GAMES! We played Captain’s Ball first and next, what I would call a “wet, soapy, dirty” game. To me, the significance of the “wet, soapy, dirty” game is to build the teamwork amongst the members. Those who reached the ‘peak’ first will help the rest who were still struggling to get to the top. And, I thought it was a good challenge.
We had CHICKEN RICE for lunch, followed by a history/culture talk by Heng Hao and Jacqueline. We watched a video on the Genocide War and learnt a new dance! This dance requires good coordination with each other and we carried it out really well, considering the fact that it was first time for most of us, except Heng Hao, our dance leader.
Then, it was turn for Isabel and Yi Mei to brief us on the “Do’s and Don’ts.” We then had a ‘Reflection time’ where each individual had to say 1 good and 1 bad issue that happened on Day 2. Like many of my group members, I felt that our team bonded really well on the second day. After the reflection, we went back to our various groups again and continued working with our members. I went over to the Culture Exchange group and was supposed to give the team a hand but I had to leave due to some family matters. It was a pity that I was not able to be there to share the fun with all of them, but it’s good to know that they enjoyed themselves.
We had another session of debrief later at night. This time, we reflected on the difficulties we faced in the different groups we were in. Personally, reflecting what we’ve done for the day is a good opportunity for us to voice whatever opinions we have. Over the two days of bonding, our group has definitely became much closer to each other after the various activities and we’ve shown that, as a team, we can overcome obstacles together.

Cultural exchange group

We were separated into different groups and they were the cultural exchange group, booth & bookmarks group and finally the donation group.

I was in the cultural exchange group. My initial thought was, "oh, being in the booth & bookmarks group would be better for me because i enjoy cutting and drawing more." Therefore, I was not looking forward because there was something that I was more interested in. The cultural exchange group was lucky as we could all stay in the HQ and not moving to other blocks. We gathered few pieces of papers and separated them into various categories. They were micro games, macro games and food.

For the micro games, we thought of stuff like hopscotch, 5 stones, yoyo, zero point, country flag eraser games, skipping, pick up stick and pepsi cola. There were more but some were excluded due to their feasibility. These games do bring memories. As we grow up, we tend to forget the good times we had due to the changes in interests. In the past, I used to enjoy playing the games that I mentioned earlier. Now that I am 18, I restrict myself to only games that are played by people of my age. When I was given a chance to try out the games like pepsi cola on the second day of the camp, I realised those restrictions were unnecessary and I really enjoyed playing that game.

We also came up with the macro games. It was an amazing race consisting of 8 stations. The cultural exchange group came up with several ideas, mostly from their previous camps.

As for the food, we thought of bak ku teh, roti john, laksa, minced meat noodles, chrysanthumum tea, barley and more. As we were thinking of what are the food to cook at Cambodia, most of the people felt hungry.

After all the presentations, games and learning of dance steps, the cultural exchange group went back to the HQ to prepare the food for dinner. We were cutting hotdogs, luncheon meat and mushrooms. The feeling was different from preparing the food at home. It was fun because we were playing around while preparing the food. Definitely, not with the food! We were still efficient and did not waste much time even when we were having fun.

Henghao went on to prepare the chrysanthemum tea. After all the preparations, we went to discuss about the ideas we came up with previously. This time round, we elaborated further and had a few factors to consider: objectives, the equipments needed, amount required and also feasibility. We strike off some of the ideas after discussing. In the middle of the discussion, Henghao came with the ladle, asking the people to try the tea. He went back and forth just to ensure that the chrysanthemum tea tasted good.

After the discussion, we brought the equipments down to cook. The girls cooked the luncheon meat, hotdogs and smashed the garlic. As the place we were at did not have a plug, we had to change venue. The equipments were very heavy (T_T) and my muscles ache badly. However, compared to the donation people, that was nothing.

DINNER TIME! Many of tem gathered around the wok, cooked and throw in whatever ingredients that were given to them. We had our spaghetti and chrysanthemum tea. (The food we had were good!) All of us were contented and while some were eating, the others went on to prepare the roti john. I saw how they interacted and enjoyed themselves while cooking. (:

I really enjoyed myself after the whole day. I managed to learn a few childhood games and thought that being in the cultural exchange group was great, especially with the fun people. Thank you all for making this camp so fun and interesting! (:

Bonding Camp-Day 2 (donation grp)

For Day 2 morning, we were required to gather at the HQ room for debrief. Diana, Fiona, Sandra, Yu Heng, Bing Xian and I (Gary) were in-charged for donation stuffs. We straight away went to corporation communication office to collect the goodies bag stuffs for our coming Saturday, 12 September 2009, pre-trip event. We loaded all the stuffs to Mr Robert Yow’s car and he fetched us to Blk 72 to sort out the donation items. Due to limited space in the car, some of us were tried to squeeze in.

At first, Diana thought the donation stuffs were inside 07-10 room but actually it was not. Mr Yow came to the room and told us the stuffs were at level 8 and wanted us to shift it to the level 7 room. Because this few weeks was exam period, we were not allowed to walk in by the main entrance. Therefore, we needed to go down level 6 and walked to another end then climb up to level 8 and enter by back door.

Once we entered the room, most of us had stunned as there were many bulky cloths and shoes there required us to bring down. After we shifted out everything, I faster request a trolley from Mr Yow, so that we can use it to deliver the stuffs. Diana received a call from Ms Jamie and left 5 of us to transfer the stuffs from level 8 to level 6. Initially, we tried to carry the stuffs down. Then I saw Sandra dragged the bag down and one time she could dragged two bags, so we started to follow her and it really save us a lot of energy.

Level 6 back door was locked, I tried to went down to level 3 and take the lift back to level 6 to unlock the door. When I reached there, Diana had actually unlocked the door and they started shifted the goods from the back door to the front door. Finally, Mr Yow brought the trolley to level 6 and some of us loaded the heaviest box on the trolley and transferred it to level 7.

By the time we reached level 7, most of us felt a bit tiring and since Sarah’s group were at next door having discussion, Diana had requested them for help. They all were so kind and willing to help us and we all really appreciated that. After that, we start to sort out the donation stuffs. Bing Xian, Diana and Yu Heng were sorting out the shoes while Fiona and I were sorting out for the clothes. At first, we wanted to pack the goods to 22 packages, therefore we asked Sandra to make a trip to the market and purchase some plastic bags. We thought plastic bags would not cost much but it had exceeded our budget therefore we did not buy.

After we completed sorting out all the stuffs, we discovered that we were late for our next event which was games. We all faster ran to canteen 2 to gather with the group. First game we played was captain’s ball than follow by dirty game. After the dirty game, I really want to thank Juliana and those guys who clear up the area. I felt so sorry to them because I did not help up to clear the area.

Then we had our lunch following a talk by Heng Hao and Jacqueline. After the talk, Heng Hao was teaching us the dance step for our culture exchange. During that session, the room was full of laughing atmosphere. We all keep laughing and learning the dance steps together. It seems like all of us really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun.

Next, we continue with our donation stuffs. As most of the slippers were very dusty, we decided to carry them back to the loft to wash them. Due to shortage of manpower from the Donation’s group, we requested other groups’ guys to help us carry the stuffs over. But all of them came up to level 7 and help us to carry, including girls. We felt so touch and thank them very much.

At the Kis Mis there, we started to segregate the duties likes some of us wash the slippers, some lay out and some brought to the track to let it dry up. After all the slippers were dry up, we tied up every pair and counted for 13 pairs then bind them up. Although most of us were very tired, but we still enjoy it.

We carried the slippers back to the loft and decided to bring the shoes over from block 72 to the loft. Initially, we decided to seek for Ms Jamie to help us drive the shoes over, so that we can save some energy for the rest of the camp. However, we decided to carry all the shoes back to loft on ourselves. It was tiring but worthwhile.

Dinner was fun with the cooking group doing mass cooking for all of us. Although I did not get to eat it as I wasn’t feeling well, I could smell the aroma coming from the pasta sauce. I wish I didn’t get sick. After dinner, was washing and cleaning up and it was time for de brief. I liked the de brief because it helped us to reflect and voice out our opinion which I think is very important.

In short, I had a superb time!

SERVE CAMBODIA TEAM OOOEII!

What an amazing day we had today. This is possible only because of all the efforts that we've put in as well as the drive that came from the group of energetic students from New Town Secondary School, and not forgetting the volunteers from Student Care Services (SCS).

Before meeting my comrades (Serve Cambodia Team) this morning, I had absolutely no idea of who they were (most of them, except for a couple). However, the team was really welcoming and I was glad to be part of this trip where we will be giving back to the community as one.

At around 1030hrs, we met our counterparts from New Town Secondary school, where we as a team, will be setting a new record for the "LARGEST CONTINGENT OF PEOPLE CARRYING DIFFERENT NATION FLAGS FORMING THE LETTER "YOG"." After which, we segregated into different teams and conducted a dry-run of the event. Of course, there was the usual ice-breaking games which I am sure many of us enjoyed it because we got to know each other better and it fostered stronger friendships amongst us.

As for me, I was the "Mentor" for "Team Loud Speakers," aka Emcees! I must say the bond between the students themselves has already been built up and as such, it was easy to work and coordinate with them. The energy and vibrancy they had made the whole event a success today. No doubt there were certain areas that needed improvement, the dry-run was definitely a good start for all.

The actual event held on 12th September will be yet another challenge for all of us and I hope to see the same kind of 'RARA-ness' within the entire team so as to create a SUCCESSFUL Singapore Book record.

Today I managed to join many of the participants for the SERVE CAMBODIA first event, a mini dry run for the up-coming actual event which will be held in Ngee Ann Poly, on 12th Sept 2009.

This event, which will take place on next Saturday involves many participants from different age range to help break a world record of “the most number of people standing and holding flags” (different countries flag), they will be required to form the alphabet “YOG” while holding the flags. “YOG” stands for Youth Olympic Games, it will be held in Singapore in the year 2010. Therefore, one of the purposes of recognizing this event is to promote “YOG”.

I learnt today that “YOG” values are, respect, friendship, and excellence, and I believed that these values holds great meaning. A sports man spirit always contains these values, because they respect their opponent, they create friendship through sports and always tried their best to present excellence performances.

To make the whole event successful, a lot of helpers will be needed, which also includes students from New Town Secondary School. We are supposed to brief these students on their task on Saturday, and it went on rather well. We began with some ice-breaking games with the students, and assigned them their designated tasks. We worked as a team, created bonds, and I felt that, because we all have a common goal (which is to make the event a successful one), friendships are built.

Also, I was told the students helpers came from a class of Normal Technical students. I believed that I was able to relate to them, because I was from Normal Academic too, went through the longer route (ITE) but eventually reached my destination. The social workers said that some of them are already inspired, by this simple visit to Ngee Ann Poly and learning more insights on our school activities. I thought it was really meaningful having to inspire someone to have a goal, set a goal and achieve greater things in life. I sincerely hope that they will work towards their goals and dreams, not giving up hope.

Just a simple dry run, and it inspired the secondary school students, it also inspired me to want to reach out to more people, such as the kids in Cambodia. Bringing across hope to them and let them realize that dreams are not only dreams and it can come true with determination and hard work.

I truly enjoyed myself today, and look forward to working with the students soon! Hope everyone had a great day too. =)

Pre-Trip Dry-Run

I think we all had a GREAT day today and we definitely did a GREAT JOB! I believe we will give it our all on the actual event (:

For those who miss out the dry-run fret not we shall update you!

We had some briefing in the morning to give us a brief idea on what the event is about and what is expected of us and also had a mini introduction for the three students who join us. Shall not disclose their names you got to know them yourself for missing out LOL!

Anyway we met up with the social workers to discuss further details on what to do and how to improve further for the actual event. They are REALLY nice people and not forgetting those wonderful students from New Town Secondary. They are REALLY bunch of FUN WONDERFUL students which I’m sure ALL of you will get along with. Made many new friends and I’m really looking forward to meet them again next Saturday.

As all of you know that they are students from the Normal Technical Stream I really hope you guys will be tactful while talking to them. As in try not to use words like stupid, dumb, slow, idiots and etc. even when you think you are just joking because you might hurt their self-esteem without knowing.
